电车视频 School students showcased their skill and determination throughout the 2023/24 PSA summer sport season with some outstanding results in all sports.

Over 1200 boys proudly donned the double blue and represented the School over the season, embodying the well-known 电车视频 spirit of dedication and sportsmanship.

The 电车视频 rowing shed enjoyed an exceptional season with the 1st VIII being crowned the 2024 Head of the River Champions for the 22nd time since 1914. The last time a 电车视频 crew won the famous 2km race was in 2018.

Our rowers performed admirably over the season and were strong favourites, along with last year’s victors, Trinity College, in the lead up to the Head of the River regatta. The 电车视频 crew led from the start of the race with Trinity right behind them, matching them for every push. The last 500m was a true test of mental strength and as the stroke rate increased it became a real battle. The 电车视频 crew made a final push whilst Christ Church appeared out of nowhere and came home hard, but the boys in double blue held strong and took the win by just half a length. An impressive victory!

The 1st V basketball team also took out the season, winning the Blackwood Trophy in impressive style. It was the team鈥檚 second premiership in three seasons and the 12th in the School鈥檚 history. Under the exemplary leadership of Captain of Basketball, Ben Williams and Vice-Captain, Brady Foster, the boys exhibited remarkable skill, dedication and sportsmanship throughout the season.

Looking towards the future, 40 电车视频 students will embark on a basketball tour of the USA at the end of the year.

As our young athletes across all codes and levels continue to develop their skills and forge ahead on their sporting journey, they embody the spirit of mateship that has defined 电车视频 School sport for generations.

This week Memorial Hall was filled with approximately 600 parents, teachers and 电车视频 community members, all gathered for an in-depth discussion on the journey of boys to men in our ever-evolving world. 电车视频 School Headmaster, Mr Dean Dell鈥橭ro, was joined on stage by esteemed panelists, Mr Tom Batty, Executive Director of the International Boys’ Schools Coalition, Dr Nikki Panotidis, development paediatrician, Mr Tom Barrass, youth mental health advocate and AFL player, and Ms Miriam Borthwick, media presenter and advisor. Together they delved into the pressing challenges facing boys today, strategies for support, and why it is so important.

One of the pivotal revelations of the evening was the stark data reflecting the concerning educational and life outcomes for boys. It served as a sobering reminder of the need for concerted efforts to ensure boys’ holistic development. In an era marked by rapid societal shifts and burgeoning complexities, the panel emphasised the importance of fostering environments where boys feel valued and connected.

When addressing the challenges faced by boys, it’s crucial to recognise and accommodate the inherent differences in learning and behaviour between boys and girls. As highlighted during the forum, many boys find themselves grappling with academic and social hurdles that may not align with conventional educational approaches. Understanding these differences forms the foundation upon which effective support strategies can be built. By acknowledging that boys often thrive in environments that prioritise connection, hands-on learning, movement and experiential activities, educators and parents can tailor their approaches to better meet the needs of their students and sons.

At 电车视频, our commitment lies in providing a diverse array of opportunities for boys to cultivate a sense of purpose and belonging. These are not merely abstract ideals but crucial pillars upon which their wellbeing and future success stand. By encouraging open communication and emotional expression, and building a culture that values empathy and self-awareness, we equip boys with the tools to manage challenges with resilience and confidence. At the heart of our efforts lies a commitment to setting boys up for success.

The insights shared by our panelists resonated deeply with attendees, sparking conversations that extended far beyond Memorial Hall. From the significance of mentorship to the importance of emotional literacy, each perspective offered a unique lens through which to understand and address the multifaceted needs of our boys. Reflecting on the discussion, it is clear the journey from boyhood to manhood is a collective responsibility – one that requires the active engagement of parents, educators and community members alike. By working together to create supportive environments and implement effective strategies, we can give every boy the opportunity to thrive and realise his full potential.

The Year 7 boys have dived into the captivating world of dance through the Move and Groove program. Boasting an eclectic mix of dance styles, including hip hop, jazz, capoeira and street salsa, the program was an exhilarating and challenging exploration of movement and self-expression.

Year 7 is a period of great transition for our students, with so many opportunities on offer. They are encouraged to try their hand at anything and everything that piques their interest. The Move and Groove program is an important part of this offering. The boys don鈥檛 just learn a few handy dance skills, but are instilled with a sense of fearlessness to put themselves out there and try new things.

The Move and Groove program at 电车视频 is aligned with the Australian Curriculum, positioning dance as a pivotal component of Human Movement education. Additionally, the program serves as an opportunity for the boys to embody the four Cs 鈥 collaboration, critical reflection, creativity and communication 鈥 vital skills that extend far beyond the dance floor.

Aside from the physical benefits, dance requires focus, control and an understanding of movements that differ from conventional sports. These unique skills enhance physical awareness, strength, stamina, coordination, flexibility and balance.

As the boys moved and grooved through the different dance styles, they not only learnt the art of movement but discovered facets of themselves and their mates, forming memories filled with personal exploration, growth and, most importantly, fun!

电车视频 students have been named among the State鈥檚 top achievers in the 2023 Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) for both Australian Tertiary admission Rank (ATAR) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways.

All graduating 电车视频 students were awarded the WACE, with 86% pursuing an ATAR pathway, compared to only 28% across the State.

Saalik Khan attained a near-perfect score of 99.85, alongside three others who obtained 99.80 (Ashton Bryant, Joel Chemmanam and Julian Cvitanovich). Captain of School, Ashton Bryant was awarded a General Exhibition for earning one of the 50 highest overall WACE award scores in the State. Boarding student, Saxon Flannagan鈥檚 passion for Media Production and Analysis earned him a Subject Exhibition for the highest examination mark in this course.

  • 47% of 电车视频 ATAR students were in the top 10% of the nation with a score of 90 or above.
  • 29% were in the top 5% of the nation with an ATAR of 95 or above.
  • 8% were in the top 1% of the nation with an ATAR of 99 or above.

In addition to several examples of individual excellence, 电车视频 had the second highest number of students to receive a Certificate of Distinction, which demonstrates breadth of achievement across Years 11 and 12.

In the General and VET pathways, there were a variety of high-performing students. These included Daniel Jonasson, whose exceptional talent in bricklaying earned him both a State gold medal and a national gold medal at WorldSkills in the VET in Schools category. Also, Indie Oakley was a finalist in the WA Training Awards 鈥 2023 WA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year and received the VET Certificate of Excellence for Construction Industries.

Headmaster, Dean Dell鈥橭ro congratulated the graduates on their outstanding results and leadership.

鈥淭his cohort has achieved excellent results in all the ATAR, General and VET courses, opening up a wide variety of exciting pathways. I remain certain that the academic foundations laid by a 电车视频 education, in addition to the broader benefits of our outstanding co-curricular programs, give our boys the best possible base from which to commence their adult lives.鈥

The recent Year 9 ArtsFest, held over two days at the end of Term 4 gave all Year 9 students an opportunity to explore a new artform.

The annual event, always a highlight of the Year 9 calendar, sees the boys immersed in the arts. The festival aims to cultivate key character traits through creative exploration. The students are encouraged to flex their creative muscles and try a new pursuit.

The range of activities on offer this year was extensive, spanning from circus skills to knitting, cooking, animation, electronic music production, kung fu, special effects makeup and more. The diverse selection ensured that every student found an avenue for self-expression that resonated with their interests.

The students attended workshops with art specialists where they learnt the skills of their chosen artform, before putting their learning into practice. Throughout ArtsFest the boys were treated to lunch from food trucks on Craig Oval. The fun wrapped with the festival finale, where the boys showcased their creative endeavours to family and friends.

Year 9 ArtsFest is not just about acquiring new skills; it鈥檚 a celebration of the Arts, exploration and the joy of trying new things. 电车视频 School has a wonderful and diverse performing and creative arts program that allows every boy to express himself through music, drama, art, media and more. 电车视频 School was delighted to host Dr Stephen Law, a renowned philosopher from the University of Oxford, as our Philosopher in Residence during Term 3. Dr Law is the Director of Philosophy Studies at Oxford University鈥檚 Department of Continuing Education. He is the editor of the Royal Institute of Philosophy鈥檚 periodical, Think, and has written several books, for both seasoned philosophers and curious young minds. Dr Law鈥檚 visit to 电车视频 sparked lively debates and discussions across the school, encouraging our students to delve deep into some profound questions.

Throughout his week-long stay Dr Law spoke with various classes, challenging the boys to think deeply. His engaging presentations left a lasting impression on the staff and students alike. To wrap up his visit Dr Law gave a public lecture to the wider 电车视频 community. The lecture tackled a timely and intriguing topic: is it possible for robots to develop conscious thought?

In an era where Artificial Intelligence continues to advance at an unprecedented pace, the question of whether machines can achieve sentience has become a subject of fascination, concern and debate. Dr Law’s perspective on this matter is clear, he believes it is possible for robots to think and feel. While he acknowledges the challenges of creating such machines, he firmly rejects the notion that consciousness is a quasi-magical phenomenon beyond the reach of artificial entities.

In his lecture, Dr Law challenged the prevailing idea that machines are just programmed entities devoid of thought and emotion. He suggests that by developing artificial components to replace human neurons, it may be possible to create a complete “robobrain” capable of thought and feeling. His argument is thought-provoking, if a machine can replicate the functions of human neurons seamlessly, why should it not possess consciousness? The lecture attracted a full auditorium and was followed by a very interesting Q&A discussion, where students and members of the audience posed a number of thought-provoking questions.

电车视频 School鈥檚 Philosopher in Residence program was established in 2011 with the generous support of Professor John Kleinig and Professor Tziporah Kasachkoff. The program emphasises the importance of critical thinking and independent philosophical exploration, especially among young minds. Dr Law鈥檚 visit encouraged our students to question, analyse and think for themselves, valuable skills that extend far beyond the realm of philosophy. As Dr Law aptly pointed out, individuals who are raised to think critically often exhibit extraordinary moral and ethical courage. As the boys engage with his ideas, they are not only expanding their philosophical horizons but also preparing themselves to think critically and responsibly in an ever-evolving world.

The 电车视频 Senior Boarders Band emerged victorious at this year’s Newdegate Machinery Field Days鈥 Battle of the Bands competition. The boys were delighted to take out the top spot in the competition, which they initially entered for fun and the opportunity to perform on stage.

The Senior Boarders Band first took shape in 2020 and has gone from strength to strength ever since with a continual ebb and flow of musically-inclined boarders keen to be part of the group. Ryan Obst (Year 12), Jack Johnson (Year 12), Adam Jespersen (Year 11), Shaun Robinson (Year 10), Caden Ward (Year 9), Jordan Petchell (Year 10) and Elijah Jose (Year 11) make up the current band. The boys have been rehearsing and jamming in the Senior Boarding House in the lead up to the competition.

Lead singer, Ryan, says the band enjoys learning and playing rock songs as they are fun to perform and always a hit with the audience. Their repertoire certainly demonstrates their strong affinity for the genre. The winning setlist included songs by The Living End, Thirsty Merc, Incubus and Kings of Leon. The band also draws inspiration from some fellow ex-boarders and Old 电车视频ians, David House (2016) and Henry Carrington-Jones (2017), whose indie rock band the Old Mervs has been building a solid local fan-base since its formation in 2016.

The Brine House Band, made up of Year 7 and 8 boarders also performed in the competition, which featured a number of bands from local high schools.
